Tent by the lake
The sun goes down over the water and the dog is already asleep
A canvas wall tent opened onto a pine-fringed lake at sunset, its flaps tied back around a view of low hills and a long gold reflection. Inside, a folding table holds an open field journal, an enamel mug and a spread of maps, while a dog sleeps on the rug beside a packed rucksack and a pair of muddy boots. Everything smells of woodsmoke and warm canvas, and there is nothing left to do today but write the day down.

In this room
- A journal: what you write stays in the room, and only the people you choose can read it.
- A sound of its own — rain, a fire, a radio station to leave playing.
- A clock that keeps your time.
- A window with the real weather where you are.
- A note for the day, where you will see it.
- Frames for your own photographs.
- An assistant that knows the room and what you keep in it.
- A lamp that turns the room from light to dark.
- A flame flickers.
- The lamps give a soft glow.
- After dark the same room has a night of its own, with its own light.
